Starting in the 1800s and continuing into the 20th century, Indigenous children were forcibly taken to government-sponsored residential schools to erase their traditional languages and cultures. This moving book tells of one such child, author Larry Loyie, and his last summer with his Cree tribe. It is a time of learning and adventure. He cares for an abandoned baby owl, watches his grandmother make winter moccasins, and sees her kill a huge grizzly with one shot. The sensitive text and Heather Holmlund's expressive illustrations beautifully capture the joy and drama of an Indigenous family's last summer together.

Every kid likes being freaked out watching a great white shark attack, but this book exposes the reality: that sharks are incredible creatures and we are just beginning to understand their complex lives. Collection spreads featuring hundreds of sharks open chapters focussing on specific shark families. Thorough, up-to-date information is combined with cutting-edge facts about sharks' amazing memories, shark no-go zones, and cleaners and clingers-on: fish that travel with and attend sharks. The book encourages an active response: sharks are endangered and here's what you can do about it. Fantastic photos, structured layouts, and age-appropriate vocabulary entice newly confident readers into the world of information books. Data boxes, maps, and stats encourage related numeracy and science skills. Vetted by literacy experts.

"This nonfiction picture book is illustrated with stunning wildlife photographs and tells the story of a lone wolf who swims to an island in the Great Bear Rainforest."--. The Great Bear Rainforest is a majestic place full of tall trees, huge bears and endless schools of salmon. Award-winning photographer and author Ian McAllister's luminous photographs illustrate the story of a lone wolf who swims to one of the small islands that dot the rainforest's coast. The island provides him with everything he needs―deer, salmon, fresh water―everything, that is, but a mate. When a female wolf arrives on the island's rocky shores, she and he start a family and introduce their pups to the island's bounty.

Wolf Island is part of the My Great Bear Rainforest series, which includes The Seal Garden, A Bear's Life and A Whale's World.

In keeping with the original Japanese format, this book reads from back to front and from right to left. Ichigo Kurosaki never asked for the ability to see ghosts—he was born with the gift. When his family is attacked by a Hollow—a malevolent lost soul—Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, dedicating his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured spirits themselves find peace. Find out why Tite Kubo’s Bleach has become an international manga smash-hit!

Ichigo Kurosaki thought that Soul Reapers were the only ones hunting Hollows, but he was wrong. Enter Uryû Ishida, a Quincy, and possibly the last member of a powerful clan that died out over 200 years ago. Unlike Soul Reapers who strive to cleanse Hollows of their sins and send them to the Soul Society, Quincies adopt a more direct approach--they kill Hollows without hesitation. To demonstrate the supremacy of the Quincies' ways, Uryû challenges Ichigo to a contest--bait is spread around the city, attracting a large number of unstable Hollows. Whoever defeats the most wins, regardless of the danger.

Also, Orihime and Chad, confronted with a host of Hollows terrorizing their friends, awaken to their own psychic abilities. Who is the strongest? Find this out and more in the action-packed fifth volume of Tite Kubo's Bleach!

To help readers better appreciate the cultural context of these stories, Ellen has included her own commentary. The book offers much of value to anyone interested in the wisdom and the culture of the Coast Salish peoples, including students in First Nations Studies, participants in healing circles and discussion groups, and general readers.

Convinced that the ancient teachings of Xeel’s are much needed in today’s world, Ellen wrote this book to share his stories with the wider world. Artist Mungo Marti encouraged her to write, telling her that this is an important way to honour your ancestors―by writing down the stories they teach you.

Ellen Rice White―whose Coast Salish name is Kwulasulwut (“Many Stars”)―is from the Snuneymuxw Nation of Nanaimo on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island. She has touched many lives in her decades as a teacher, storyteller, dancer, drummer, healer, and political activist. She is Resident Elder at Malaspina University-College. Illustrator Daniel Elliott is an artist from the Shts’uminus First Nation who also works as as Aboriginal Education assistant in Nanaimo public schools. Legends and Teachings of Xeel's, the Creator is the final book by celebrated Indigenous educator Dr. Ellen White. She died in 2018 at the age of ninety-four. White was a cultural knowledge keeper, author, linguist, herbalist, healer, traditional midwife, political activist and advocate who spent her life seeking knowledge and understanding to help peoples and nations better understand themselves and each other. She was invested into the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada for her many accomplishments. Her last book features an exciting collection of short stories: "The Creator and the Flea Lady," "The Boy Who Became a Killer Whale," "The Sockeye that Became a Rainbow" and "The Marriage of the Seagull and the Crow." Each story is accompanied by a discussion piece that provides cultural context and questions for the reader to consider. Snuneymuxw Elder and storyteller Ellen White shares four stories handed down to her from her grandparents and their ancestors.

The tales are ancient but their lessons are surprisingly modern: how a mother can help her baby survive and thrive; how a community can prevent pre-teens from becoming angry and rebellious; how people from different cultures can learn to respect one another and celebrate their differences ; and how a young man can learn to take responsibility for the children he has fathered.

Ichigo Kurosaki was a little boy when his mother passed away. One rainy day, Ichigo, whose ability to see the undead is a blessing and a curse, tried to stop a young girl from drowning in a nearby river. His mother, Masaki, ran after them, frantically trying to rescue her only son. Then everything went black, and Ichigo awoke only to discover his mother dead and the little girl gone.

It's the anniversary of Masaki's death, and the entire Kurosaki clan, along with former Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki, head to the cemetery to pay their respects. Sleeping demons rarely ever stay still and pretty soon Ichigo confronts the Grand Fisher, the Hollow that may be responsible for his mother's demise. This and more in this action-packed volume of Tite Kubo's manga smash-hit Bleach.
